How Open Banking payments work in Spain
Spain took a different route to PSD2 from its neighbours. Rather than each bank building its own interface, most Spanish banks — including the largest — expose their PSD2 APIs through the Redsys hub, a shared platform that follows a Berlin Group profile with hub-specific routing for each bank.
The hub makes broad Spanish coverage efficient, but it does not make the banks identical. Each bank behind the hub keeps its own strong customer authentication journey, its own rules on which fields are required and its own ceiling on status reporting, and a few banks sit outside the hub altogether with separate interfaces.
Spanish consumers are thoroughly used to instant account-to-account payments through Bizum, so approving a payment in a banking app is second nature. Payment initiation settles as SEPA Instant Credit Transfers, which Spanish banks adopted early and widely.
What you bring
- Authorisation as a payment institution with payment initiation permission — from Banco de España, or from another EU or EEA regulator with a passport notification into Spain
- eIDAS certificates issued to your firm by a qualified trust service provider — a QWAC to identify you to each bank and a QSealC to sign requests, both carrying the payment initiation role
- Your merchants, your contracts and your compliance framework — the payments run under your licence

Payment initiation in Spain: common questions
- Can a PISP licensed in another EU country initiate payments in Spain?
- Yes. PSD2 lets a payment institution authorised in one EU or EEA member state provide payment initiation services in another through passporting: you notify your home regulator, which informs Banco de España. You do not need a second licence in Spain, and your eIDAS certificates are valid across the EU whichever member state issued them.
- What is the Redsys PSD2 hub?
- Redsys is the Spanish payments processor that operates a shared PSD2 platform on behalf of most Spanish banks. A third-party provider integrates the hub once and addresses each bank through it. The interface follows a Berlin Group profile, with differences by bank in authentication journeys and required fields.
- Does one Redsys integration cover every Spanish bank?
- It covers most of the market, not all of it. Some Spanish banks run their own PSD2 interfaces outside the hub, and the banks inside it still behave differently from one another. MVP Payments maintains and monitors each bank as its own connection, behind one API.
